David Gandy was entered into a modelling competition on This Morning, prior to graduating from University with a Marketing degree. He won a competition and with it, a prestigious contract with Select Model Management. At that moment, his life took a very different direction. In 2006 he became the muse of exclusive designers Dolce & Gabbana, annually starring in their apparel campaigns but best known as the face off their “Light Blue” fragrance, currently one of the world’s top selling male fragrances.
The iconic campaign saw David’s face and incredible body become recognizable literally overnight, with a 50ft billboard in Times Square, over 11 million internet hits to view his campaign and global recognition, gaining him the title of the worlds “only male supermodel”.
David has shot with some of the most sought after international photographers including Mario Testino and Steven Meisel and boasts an envious portfolio of editorial work including the cover of VMan, L’Optimum and GQ. Mario Testino said; “David has something of what the 1980’s supermodels have. He radiates health and positivity. I think he has what It takes to be very big. It’s exciting because it signifies a real shift in men’s fashion. The male model world is changing.”
In 2012 David was the only male model to represent his country and the fashion segment at the Olympic Closing Ceremony, he also starred alongside Kate Moss, Stella McCartney, Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders in the British iconic comedy show Absolutely Fabulous. Overseas, his images for Banana Republic graced the side of Virgin America Aeroplanes, flying high at 35,000ft and in the UK he was invited to sit on the London Men’s Collections 2012 committee, chaired by Dylan Jones, supporting the UK’s first ever men’s fashion week with other influencers from Tom Ford and Christopher Bailey to Simon Fuller and Tinie Tempah and has since become an Official London Collections: Men, Ambassador.
2013 Began with the launch of Davids Blue Steel Appeal, a series of events and initiatives helping to fundraise for Comic Relief through fashion with David as the ambassador for Red Nose Day 2013. His first initiative raised in excess of £230,000. Two years ago, David had the honour of being invited to participate in the infamous Mille Miglia car race in Italy with Yasmin Le Bon, finishing 2nd in his Jaguar team and was invited back again to take part in 2015 with new team mate, Jodie Kidd.
In September 2014, David launched his own range of underwear and sleepwear as part of his ongoing collaboration with British brand Marks & Spencer’s, with events being held in London, Paris, Ireland and Hong Kong to celebrate the launch. “David Gandy for Autograph” has been designed and created by David and has been a hugely successful with an expansion onto his own swimwear line in 2015 of which, at launch, a pair of shorts was sold every minute. He also starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in hermetic video ‘First Love’. 2015 continued to be equally successful with David being named “Most Stylish Man” at the GQ Awards in Australia, breaking the world Endurance Record as part of the Vector Martini Racing iRace Pro team and consolidating his credentials as an entrepreneur launching his own shoe collection with designer and business partner, David Preston.
A guest blogger for Vogue.com, the official car reviewer for GQ.com and a columnist for the Telegraph Men, David has diversified into film, starring alongside Helena Christiensen in “Away We Stay” for W Hotels in 2010 and in a short film for fashion brand, Bionda Castana. He has created, produced and launched a Men’s Style Guide app providing help and style and clothing advice to men, the app went Top 3 in the hugely competitive Lifestyle chart and 2012 saw him launch his equally successful fitness and training app.
David has graced the covers of many high end fashion magazines including, Esquire, L’Officiel Hommes, Details, The Rake, Attitude and many more. Under the careful guidance of his agency, Select Model Management he continues to be an ever-growing force on the international fashion scene.
